Why is affirming mental healthcare so important for the LGBTQ+ community?
LGBTQ+ individuals face a number of unique stressors and challenges, such as cultural stigma and various forms of discrimination. As a result of these unique stressors, mental health conditions are more prevalent within the LGBTQ+ population than in the general population. Furthermore, many treatment providers may not be aware of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ clients, leading to treatment that can further invalidate the client’s experience. At AICT, we take a person-centered approach, recognizing that – regardless of identity – no two individuals’ experiences are the same, and we are committed to providing an open and non-judgmental environment to treat the issues that are most important to our clients.
