Why is affirming mental healthcare so important for the LGBTQ+ community?
LGBTQ+ individuals face a number of unique stressors and challenges, such as cultural stigma and various forms of discrimination. As a result of these unique stressors, mental health conditions are more prevalent within the LGBTQ+ population than in the general population. Furthermore, many treatment providers may not be aware of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ clients, leading to treatment that can further invalidate the client’s experience. At AICT, we take a person-centered approach, recognizing that – regardless of identity – no two individuals’ experiences are the same, and we are committed to providing an open and non-judgmental environment to treat the issues that are most important to our clients.
LGBTQ+ therapeutic offerings at AICT:
AICT has psychologists who have received intensive training on adapting empirically-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), specifically for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition, some examples of topics that sexual- and gender-minority clients might explore in therapy include (but are not limited to):
- Navigating Identity Exploration: Helping individuals explore and embrace their sexual, gender, and personal identities.
- Coming Out and Transitioning: Providing guidance and emotional support during the coming-out process and/or gender transition journey.
- Overcoming Shame and Building Self-Acceptance: Empowering clients to heal from internalized stigma/shame and develop self-compassion and pride around their identities.
- Promoting Healthy Coping Strategies: Reducing reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms (e.g., substance abuse, self-injurious behaviors) and developing sustainable skills for coping.
- Strengthening Social Connections: Building and maintaining supportive, meaningful relationships.
- Resilience in the Face of Discrimination: Offering tools to cope with and navigate experiences of bias, stigma, or marginalization.
- Supporting Family Members: Providing resources and counseling for family members to better understand and support their LGBTQ+ loved ones.
- Managing Anxiety and Stress: Managing ongoing stress and anxiety related to identity, relationships, and/or societal pressures.
- Coping with Trauma: Providing a safe space to process and work through past experiences of trauma and build a path toward healing.
*Our practice can also provide referrals as well as written letters of support for clients seeking gender affirming medical treatments.
